Smart Water Tanks and Pump Automation

Level sensing, pump protection and alerts can prevent dry-running pumps, overflow and unpleasant surprises.

Where water supply is intermittent, a household or building depends on tanks and pumps. Managing them by hand means climbing to check, or finding out the tank is empty at the worst moment. A modest amount of automation takes most of that away.

What the system does

  1. A level sensor reports how full the tank is.
  2. When the level is low and the source has water, the controller starts the pump.
  3. The pump stops at the target level, or earlier if a protection condition is met.
  4. You are notified if something is wrong, for example the tank does not fill as expected.

Protecting the pump

Pumps are damaged by running dry or running too long. Protection can include detecting the absence of water at the source, limiting run time and monitoring the electrical load. Which protections are suitable depends on the pump and installation, so they are specified after inspecting what you have.

Leaks and overflow

Leak sensors near tanks and pipework give an early warning. Where a motorised valve is installed, the supply can also be closed automatically.

Things to confirm in your case

  • Tank type, size and access for sensors.
  • The pump model and its electrical requirements.
  • Whether notifications are needed when away, which requires connectivity at the time of sending.
